The jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict against on all counts, agreeing with prosecutors that photographs of girls and women in various states of undress found in Powell's possession last fall were used for sexual gratification. Defense attorneys had argued there was too much reasonable doubt in the case to convict Powell. Powell had no visible reaction as Judge Ronald Culpepper read each of the counts. Powell is…

Memorial Coliseum (photo by Brian Libby) BY FRED LEESON Here’s question that might be novel in the history of architecture. Can a single building have two exteriors? The issue arose when the Portland Landmarks Commission on May 14 considered proposed renovations to the “exterior” of Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Under Portland’s zoning code, the commission cannot rule on changes to an interior space unless the interior space itself has been designated as a landmark. That distinction was troubling to two landmarks commissioners, who said the building’s unique “bowl-within-a-glass…

  • UPDATED: LIFT service affected by transit strike

    14 May 2012 | 6:00 pm
UPDATE: KOIN reports that a tentative deal has been reached. Terms of the deal have not been released pending ratification. Original message content after the jump. Now things get interesting. While we've been focused on the labor dispute between TriMet operators and ATU757, another dispute has been brewing: between ATU 757 and First Transit, the outsourcing firm that TriMet uses to provide lift service. And now ATU757 is striking First Transit, and LIFT service is being impacted. TriMet's statement is here, a statement by ATU 757 president Jonathan Hunt is (courtesy of Al) here. Until the…

  • "Portland creep" and the density debate

    14 May 2012 | 4:00 am
As most of you are aware, election day is Tuesday, May 15. Portland Afoot and others have thoroughly covered many of the races that are on the ballot, including the races for the open Metro council positions, the Portland city council, and the Portland mayoral race. One set of races that hasn't gotten as much coverage in the urbanist and alternative-transportation blogosphere, but which are also important, are the races for the Clackamas County Commission. A conservative political action committee, the Oregon Transformation Project, is running a slate of candidates for the commission, hoping…

I’m going to quote at length here from one part of this Cracked article about Jews in science fiction movies. Specifically, where it addresses the character of Mr. Universe from the movie Serenity. Mr. Universe is the ultimate tech geek, and he lives alone on a moon. Oh wait, not alone. He’s married to a [...]

To be clear, I don’t want to dismiss or ignore the rhetorical importance of a sitting President of the United States expressing his personal support for marriage equality. Whatever the final opening weekend take for The Avengers, nearly $25.00 of it will be my four viewings. It wasn’t until my third that I consciously noticed the movie’s narrative theme. But to get there, let’s double back to the now-infamous A. O. Scott review in The New York Times. “I aim to misbehave,” Malcolm [...]

    23 Apr 2012 | 12:26 pm
This morning I went on something of a rolling Twitter rant about brand use of cultural product check-in service GetGlue, prompted mostly by the incessant use of the site by Marvel to provide stickers for The Avengers, which isn’t even out yet and therefore can’t actually be watched by anyone checking-in. The brand thing where [...]

Joss Whedon is nothing if not, in general, publicly deferential to whoever is footing the bill for his work. That’s not necessarily a bad policy to have. Back in 2008, not much in the way of public grumbling escaped the Fox lot in the early days of production on Dollhouse, when decisions were made that [...]

    . . . Our Oregon Adventure . . .

  • A Girls Weekend

    Katie
    24 Apr 2012 | 2:28 pm
As I mentioned before, I flew down to Orange County last month for a girls weekend with my mom and sisters. It was the first time I got to see them since Nick proposed, and we dedicated the weekend to (five!) dress appointments and wedding talk. It was a short yet very sweet weekend, albeit very tiring! I did not expect dress try-ons to be so draining-- by the end of each day I was in a daze! The adventure was well-worth it, though, as I found THE dress. Of course I can't describe it on here, nor can I post any pictures (boo!) but I will say that it is everything that I wanted in a dress.
  • Catching Up

    24 Apr 2012 | 12:42 pm
We've been keeping pretty busy during these last few weeks, if you couldn't tell by our absence of posts ;) We have lots to catch up on, so I suppose we'll start at the beginning! First up: snow! We woke up to a winter wonderland one day in mid-March. It was a pleasant surprise-- we received at least 4-5 inches overnight, and it kept coming down well into the morning. This was our first real "snow day" in Oregon. It has snowed several times before, but not the the point where we couldn't drive around due to dangerous icy roads. The snow stuck for a couple days, too, which is also unusual.

It's been just about a month since Nick put a ring on my finger, and it has been a whirlwind ever since! Granted this whirlwind is a good one. The day after his proposal, Nick whisked me away to Seattle for the weekend. Our hotel was less than a mile away from all of the sights, and despite the freezing winds, we were able to hit everything on the list! The week after that was the last week that I worked at Insidetrack. Those five days were filled with lots of emotion; while I was excited to be starting a new chapter with Nick, it was so difficult to say goodbye to my beloved students and…

Well this post is obviously long over-due. With the extended holiday break and then a mad rush getting things back in order, we've been a bit busy. Last weekend I drove down to Eugene to be with Nick and Toby. Nick hosted an open house for a new four-plex on Saturday and we spent the rest of the weekend running errands, doing a puzzle, and looking at guns (yes, Nick is trying to talk me into getting a 20 gauge. Didn't see that one coming, huh? ;) This weekend started off with a fun-filled game night with three of my coworkers and their significant others. All of the girls work together and it…
