  • Dear Portland startups: You’re a rising star and you’re cool. Why not prove it at the Oregon Technology Awards?

    Rick Turoczy
    9 Feb 2010 | 9:07 am
No doubt, running a startup and being an entrepreneur is all about hard work. Heads down, rolled up sleeves, “eyes on the prize” hard work. It’s why you do what you do. But I’ve got to tell you, people. Every once in awhile, you need to stop, poke your head up, and let people know how incredibly cool your pursuits are. Trust me on this one. It will only help you. And here’s on opportunity to do just that: the Oregon Technology Awards. There are two particular categories that I think you’ve got a chance to win. Rising Star: Presented to the company that has…

How do you get the idea off the ground? What is going to force you to actually make something happen? All good questions. And you might find the answers to them at Startup Weekend Portland. Greg Oden, after his last injury, has been called by many (pretty much all of whom are clueless) a bust. It’s easy to understand their logic, with all of his missed games due to freak injuries. This has to weigh on the psyche of someone such as Greg. Every time his name comes up he’s a punchline, every time, his name synonymous with knees exploding and just general unwellness. There’s Bill Simmons throwing out these petty observations that he “walks old.” That has to get (pardon the choice of words) old. Now, here comes the question: how does a player, basically…

  • A Casino in Gresham?

    28 Jan 2010 | 5:06 am
A committee who calls themselves Good for Oregon is proposing to build a gaming center in the Gresham, Oregon area. Specifically, they are looking at the abandoned Multnomah Kennel Club location (NE 223rd/Halsey). The group estimates that the project would bring 3,000 permanent employees and 2,000 construction jobs to the area. They have filed initiatives with the Oregon Secretary of State's office and will be seeking voter support in this year's November election. Would you support this initiative?A Casino in Gresham? originally appeared on About.com Portland, OR on Thursday, January 28th,…
  • Countdown to H & M

    19 Jan 2010 | 12:27 am
Now that it's 2010, Portlanders are mere months away from being able to shop at one of the world's favorite budget-friendly clothing stores, H & M. Lots of Portlanders (including me) have always put H & M on their "must shop" list when visiting cities like New York and San Francisco. And later this year, Portland's Pioneer Place will be home to our very own location. It's true, the quality of the clothes leaves something to be desired, but sometimes a girl needs a last-minute emergency outfit without spending hundreds, and that's where stores like H & M hit the mark. Countdown…

  • Fertility and Chemical Exposure

    1 Feb 2010 | 5:39 am
Photo by {Guerrilla Futures | Jason Tester} There is a lot of speculation around what a woman should or should not be exposed to while trying to get pregnant. For example, caffeine consumption, tuna fish, processed sugars, and refined flours are all to be avoided when trying to conceive, and only fresh, organic foods should be consumed (which is all true). However, did you know that your environment can also harbor several unknown hazards? A recent article came out about a research study on fire retardant chemicals and their affect on the ability to conceive : Researchers looked at data on…

  • Resources: Acupuncture for Dogs in Portland

    8 Jan 2010 | 5:31 pm
Sullivan (Sully) While browsing through the millions of pages on Facebook, I discovered a wonderful veterinary acupuncture site that many of my peers already knew about- Four Paws Acupuncture in Massachusetts. Jeanie Mossa Kraft, the owner of the site, has fantastic posts on the blog- I love the latest one about stray dogs riding the subway in Russia! She also has a recipe for healthy doggie meatballs, as well as a protective winter wax for dog paws (in case we actually see snow here in Portland again!). Her site is also full of information for feeding dogs appropriate foods (no onions!),…

    22 Dec 2009 | 5:38 pm
Photo by Serge Arsenie The longest night is now behind us with the passing of Winter Solstice, and the days will slowly become brighter. Now that winter has officially arrived, we can start to treat our bodies and minds with the Chinese Medicine knowledge that has been around and practiced by many for years. This is the season where we are told to meditate more, sleep in when possible, and take care of our fatigued bodies. This is what we call the Yin (cold, dark, slow )time of year, as opposed to Summer’s Yang (warm, bright, energetic). Winter here is definitely Yin, with the cold,…

  • Talk about a backdraft: Does one firefighter memorial invalidate another?

    Brian Libby
    3 Feb 2010 | 10:17 am
Photo by Dan Haneckow Dan Haneckow framed the issue succinctly on his Cafe Unknown blog a few days ago: "The question is not if Portland's firefighters deserve a larger, more accessible memorial. They most certainly do. But does it have to come at the cost of the first one, with its own intrinsic value in addition to what it represents? Is Portland large enough for two memorials or so small as there can only be one?"This mini-controversy has been simmering ever since it was announced that a new firefighters memorial will be built along the East Bank Esplanade. The new memorial is a great…

image courtesy Architects Without Borders-Oregon The Oregon chapter of Architects Without Borders first was established about five years ago, following two back-to-back natural disasters: the tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia and Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Volunteers wound up designing a school in Sri Lanka a housing prototype for New Orleans, and volunteers also traveled to the Mississippi coast to  provide damage assessment. When flooding damaged much of small-town Vernonia in the Oregon coast range, chapter members also provided free design…

photo by Aaron RogosinSeveral years ago, an artist named Carole Zoom bought a former Goodwill store building in Eugene and rented it out (at a reduced rate) to local nonprofit arts organizations such as the Eugene Ballet. She then sold the Midtown Art Center, as it was called, to the Eugene Ballet and moved to Portland.I first spoke with Carole two years ago about her interest in trying a similar project in the Rose City. And as of its opening party last Thursday, Zoomtopia is the completed result. The single-story building on SE Belmont at Eighth Avenue was renovated from a BOORA Architects…

Photo by Brian LibbyLast night at Memorial Coliseum was a wonderful kind of civic spectacle. Inside the arena, where the ice was set up for a Winter Hawks hockey game, presenters from all walks of life gave their pitches on what should be done with this landmark building. There were educators talking about creating a cultural museum, entrepreneurs suggesting wave pools and video conferencing centers, architects, developers, veterans' groups, peace activists, social service providers championing a cultural center, and representatives of the Trail Blazers there with their preservation…

As the Rose Quarter Stakeholder Advisory Committee gathers this evening (January 26 from 5-8:30pm) at Memorial Coliseum, I'd like to continue looking at some of the proposals. In the last four posts the focus was one project at a time, but with 95 proposals in all and presentations coming today, I'll present several this time.First there is the "Light It Up" (pictured in renderings at top and immediately below), a concept described as bringing natural light into two zones within the existing Coliseum building. From a Seattle soccer fan site, we get this projection: Portland have sold 5,000 season ticket deposits and but there is little doubt they will be able to fill every seat of PGE’s intended 24,000 capacity when MLS kicks off in Oregon in 2011.I'll bet that when it comes time to talk to the PGE Park neighbors about parking, the numbers won't be quite so big. Meanwhile, Little Lord Paulson offers this refreshing sip of Kool-Aid: "This is bigger than the Pacific Northwest being the hub of soccer in North America," Paulson said. "This is about soccer finally taking hold in the country. You know,…

One of our readers (and Transit Board™ users), e-mailed in this question over the weekend: I have a question about the GPS real-time transit tracker system for MAX. I've noticed that there has been no real-time information for any MAX stop for many months, at least since the Green line went online. I've sent multiple emails to Trimet and even called, and they've never gotten back to me. Do you know anything about the reason for this lapse? I don't, but I know we have many TriMet folks in our audience. Any info?

A study out of Berkeley has found that kids living in calmer traffic areas are less obese than those living near heavy traffic.

I’ve been more or less obsessed with Mass Effect 2 since it dropped, forsaking all other games (except for a bit of Borderlands) to advance the storyline. It’s a gorgeous game, with terrific voice-work, fascinating characters, and a bunch of great intertwined storylines. The word “epic” gets tossed around a lot when discussing games, but this one really deserves it. In fact, TIME.com called it “The Avatar of video games – except it’s better written”. Speaking of ME2, does anyone else think the character of Samara looks, sounds, and moves like a…

However, I wasn’t staying hydrated during the day, and it became clear that I just needed to keep a bottle of water handy. So I started looking around for a refillable water bottle that would fit my own idiosyncratic needs. Specifically, a decent volume, a watertight seal, easy to clean, and easy to drink from. What I ended up getting, more from frustration than anything else, is an ETHOS 20 oz water bottle. I found it at Starbucks. I…

You might have noticed that I don’t write as much about my darling daughter anymore. Partly this is because she’s now online, and has friends and peers that are online, and I don’t want to scar her psyche any more than I absolutely have to. But more than that, it’s because she’s doing much better. The meds she takes are keeping her on a suprisingly even keel. She can pay attention in class, she can stay on task, and she can somehow resist the temptation to make inappropriate comments. It’s made a huge, huge difference. She still sometimes forgets to take…

And not only is it a primary offense (you can get pulled over for no other reason) but it carries a hefty fine ($142). It was therefore prudent for us to invest in a bluetooth headset when we purchased our daughter a cell phone for Christmas.
