Sometimes, it pays to look outside Portland and the Silicon Forest. To poke up our collective heads, take a gander, and assess what’s going on elsewhere. Even if that brief assessment only returns us to the position of navel gazing about what Portland could and should be doing. Such is the case with a recent post from Greg Huang at Xconomy, “A Tale of Three Cities: How Boston, Boulder, and Seattle Measure Up as Tech Innovation Hubs.” Like Greg. Like his writing. Figured I’d find a few good morsels. What I discovered, in addition, were some interesting insights that…

  • Unfortunately, Microsoft layoffs will affect the Portland startup and open source communities, too

    Rick Turoczy

When news that Don Dodge had been laid off from Microsoft started percolating yesterday, my mind immediately jumped to a rather sad conclusion. If they let Don go, I thought, then what did that mean for our own community presence here in Portland, Jason Mauer? Unfortunately, I learned that my assumptions were correct. Jason—the developer evangelist who has served as the face of Microsoft for much of the Portland tech community—had been part of the layoff as well. And while ill news of the Microsoft is always guaranteed to inspire a bit of grave dancing and schadenfreude, I think…

You’ve probably heard about this already, but I’ll break it down really quickly. Tim Donaghy was an NBA ref. He got caught betting. He went to jail. He wrote a tell-all book. Deadspin covered the controversial parts of the book. It connected to the Blazers. I’m guessing you already know how it’s connected to the Blazers without even clicking that link. Here’s the quote. The 2002 series certainly wasn’t the first or last time Bavetta weighed in on an important game. He also worked Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and the Trail…

    4 Nov 2009 | 2:44 pm
Photo by geraldbrazell In the spirit of Traditional Chinese Medicine, fall is the time of the Lung, which means that our lungs and skin are more likely to have problems at this time of the year, such as eczema, psoriasis, and cough, colds and flu. Each season has a feeling associated with it, and the Lung organ is Grief. But instead of mourning the loss of summer and light with the arrival of fall, check in with the smells of this unique and beautiful season change. Chinese medicine encourages living with the seasons, eating the foods that are in abundance in certain months, and allowing your…

Photo by Ana Santos Stress. It’s around us all the time, whether it’s you who is the stressed, or everyone around you. Stress comes in many forms- such as work, family, hormonal changes, illness, and major life changes. While some of these changes may be positive, the stress of them interferes with your health and happiness. Having a new baby, changing to a better job, moving to a better place are all good changes, but are still stressful! In Traditional Chinese medicine theory, stress affects the flow of energy and eventually blood flow within the body, which causes stagnation. This…

Three finalists have been announced in a Portland State University-administered design competition on behalf of the Portland Fire Bureau, the Portland Firefighters Association David Campbell Memorial Committee for the creation of a new memorial. It will be built on the Eastbank Esplanade beside the northeast corner of the Hawthorne Bridge. The competition came about when Jeff Schnabel, a member of PSU architecture department faculty was contacted by the firefighters group to assist with a new memorial that would replace the existing one on West Burnside. He suggested (and they accepted) a…

Note: This is a guest post from Daniel Friedman, a member of the Portland Downtown Neighborhood Association board. Friedman is an emeritus psychology professor at Antioch College where he taught for 21 years before retiring and moving to the South Park Blocks in 2001. Friedman grew up in Columbus, Ohio and sees in its new capped freeway a reminder that Portland should revisit its own I-405 capping plan first forwarded in the 1990s by then-mayor Vera Katz. His proposal here also comes just days after the city of Vancouver, Washington announced the results of a design competition (won by…

As many in the design and architecture community have already learned, the legendary landscape architect Lawrence Halprin passed away on Sunday, October 25.The Harvard-educated Halprin helped revolutionize public and open space design in the 1970s, with his attention to works that functioned well on a human scale and encouraged interaction, very much in the egalitarian tradition of parks and public realms created by Frederick Law Olmsted and his sons. Portland, where the Olmsted brothers designed the North and South Park Blocks, and where Halprin designed two fountains (the Keller Fountain…

    6 Nov 2009 | 9:51 am
A reader writes: We just missed losing our Jack Russell terrier tonight. I let him out for his last potty break and went to my computer. Seconds later I heard him scream. I ran to the door and threw it open to find three huge coyotes in my SW Multnomah District front yard. Two ran out the gate and one jumped the fence with ease. We checked the dog over and luckily there are no bites. But he sure is scared, and you know how fearless Jack Russells can be. Maybe you can blog something about this, so that folks who might not be aware can avoid what might have happened to us.
  • Saint Al Gore, pray for us

    6 Nov 2009 | 5:15 am
Years ago, when I was part of a thought-provoking discussion group on ecology, a skeptic in our midst argued convincingly that concern for the earth was in essence a religion. The rest of us thought about it for a while, and then told him that we didn't care -- we still believed in living with the planet in mind. Now we see that climate change is being designated a religion (or its equivalent) for some purposes under British law. Over in England, this means victory for global warming activists in some cases, but victory for the skeptics in others. It depends on the legal context. What would…

This has been a really busy week for me.  Somehow I scheduled major assignments in both of my classes for the same week.  The result:  lots of time spent reading student papers (something I actually like doing) and not much time spent doing anything else. It is also really fall here in Portland.  Most of the week was grey and rainy.  This is the view from the walkway I take from my car to my office. There were a couple of high points to the week (in addition to the papers I read).  First, there was the delicious tortilla soup S made for dinner last weekend. And I finished one of the…

Imagine arriving in Portland, Maine from a refugee camp in Somalia or Burma and not knowing the language or the customs of America. How do I mail a letter? What do traffic lights mean? What type of clothing do I need to survive a Maine winter? These simple tasks are often taken for granted but to a refugee, learning American customs and social etiquette can be an overwhelming experience. This is where an American Friend steps in to help. To a refugee our country is another world. The American Friends program, through Catholic Charities Maine Refugee and Immigration Services, is designed to…

NE Portland has many, small neighborhood churches. The names of some of them are too long to remember. This neighborhood still has a few, what I would call, Mom & Pop stores.  This sort of thing has long since vanished from most Seattle residential neighborhoods. It is like being transported back to the 1950’s, to see small churches in this setting.

Writing that post reminded me of something I read, covering the same territory, by one of my favourite bloggers, XUP, up in Ottawa. For me the highlight presentation on opening day on Wednesday was about the safety affects of different street network types. The study was based on looking at all cities in California with population of 40,000 or greater. The surprising finding was that cities built before 1950 are safer (in terms of both serious injuries and fatalities for all classes of users: auto drivers/passengers, cyclists and pedestrians) than…

I know I have lectured her countless times that she “is thirteen now, and we have higher expectations” of her. Well, that lecture is now obsolete. Have I mentioned that she’s almost as tall as I am now? And taller than her mother? Oy.
