Here in Portland, we flock in droves to hear stories told by strangers. Why? Perhaps we delight in the… -

Post-Game: Blazers vs. Pistons
19 Nov 2009 | 8:42 amBefore all of that ridiculousness that happened last night, there’s something that needs to be addressed. Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. were at the game. Is there a reason they were down here? I don’t know, I never got to ask. Maybe they were here because they wanted to see Seattle talents such as Brandon Roy or Martell Webster. Maybe they just wanted to watch some basketball. All I know, is that this past season I missed out on seeing Junior up in Seattle, so it was cool seeing him at the Rose Garden. Then again, the M’s signed him again to another one year contract,… -
Weekend in Review
16 Nov 2009 | 9:39 amThese games are coming on pretty fast and furiously, aren’t they? Jesus, it’s just an onslaught. No wonder we’re getting beat up by freak injuries such as Travis pivoting and Jerryd Bayless getting felled by bad upholstery. What’s next? LaMarcus Aldridge gets a gunshot wound from playing Modern Warfare 2? That doesn’t even make sense. Anyway, we played a few games, won ‘em, and now we have yet another one this afternoon. Considering that this is the longest road trip of the season, I would have been quite happy winning three games. We’re playing with… -
Travis Outlaw: Injured
15 Nov 2009 | 12:00 pmWhy? Why? Why couldn’t this have happened last season? Okay, that’s mean. No one wants a player to get injured, no matter how they play. But, this is especially true when the player is showing serious growth for what seems like the first time in his career. It looked like Travis finally got it. He was rebounding, he was playing defense, and he was picking his spots smartly. Now he’s injured. What does this mean? I’m not exactly sure yet. The most obvious guess is that the Blazers are worse. Where before they had three quality small forwards to start the season, they… -
Post-Game: Blazers at Minnesota
12 Nov 2009 | 8:20 amAll hail Greg Oden beast mode. If you send an undersized center at Oden, he will eat your lunch. Then he’ll eat your dinner. Then he’ll follow you to Taco Bell for fourthmeal. That’s what happens. Last night, the Timberwolves thought they would poke the hornets nest throughout the first quarter, and then they got stung. Badly. It was kind of depressing, watching their body language. They were so certain that Sunday wouldn’t happen again, and after Gomes’ buzzer beater to end the quarter, they were so excited. Then the Blazers come back in and simply destroy them. -
Post-Game: Blazers at Memphis
11 Nov 2009 | 8:37 amWas anyone actually worried? Was someone looking at the tied halftime score and thinking, “Man, that Zach Randolph’s pretty clutch, we should watch out for him.” Personally, I thought it was amusing in the way that animals doing people things, such as the bird that steals a bag of chips from a store, is amusing. They’re not supposed to be doing that, and it’s not natural, but you gotta give it up, it’s funny as hell. That’s the Grizzlies keeping pace with the Blazers. Unfortunately, that ridiculousness had to come to an end, as the Blazers had the…

Rainy Day Ideas
11 Nov 2009 | 5:51 pmI admire people who bike, hike, and go for long walks in the rain. But not all Oregonians are so hearty. I tend to stay indoors a bit more during the fall and winter. As far as entertainment goes, there always plenty of movies to catch up on. Or, you could consider another one of these rainy-day ideas. Got a rainy-day idea? Acupuncture Relief Project: The First Year
15 Nov 2009 | 9:36 pmI can’t say enough good things about the Acupuncture Relief Project. The project, which just celebrated it’s one year anniversary, has finished the first six weeks of practitioners in Nepal, and now a new group is on the way in to treat. Acupuncturists from all over the US are taking time out of their lives and practices to come to Chapagoan, Nepal and treat at a free clinic. Here is a short excerpt from the blog: One year ago, November 11th 2008, the Acupuncture Relief Project (ARP) helped open the Vajra Varhi Natural Healthcare Clinic, in Chapagoan. The day before the doors… -
Acupuncture in the Fall
4 Nov 2009 | 2:44 pmPhoto by geraldbrazell In the spirit of Traditional Chinese Medicine, fall is the time of the Lung, which means that our lungs and skin are more likely to have problems at this time of the year, such as eczema, psoriasis, and cough, colds and flu. Each season has a feeling associated with it, and the Lung organ is Grief. But instead of mourning the loss of summer and light with the arrival of fall, check in with the smells of this unique and beautiful season change. Chinese medicine encourages living with the seasons, eating the foods that are in abundance in certain months, and allowing your… -

October 24 is National Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day
22 Oct 2009 | 9:11 amHappy Oriental Medicine Day on Saturday! Hug an acupuncturist, or try a delicious (?) Chinese herbal tea! They taste odd, but are oh-so helpful for the body. If you are fortunate enough to live in Portland, Oregon (my beloved city), then get out there and take a look at the massive acupuncture needle in our beautiful, if not a slightly damp city! According to Acupuncture Today, the informative new source for all things acupuncture, October 24, 2002 marked the first annual observance of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day. Hillsdale Terrace: debating the "inescapable stigma" of public housing [updated]
16 Nov 2009 | 12:01 pmIn the opinion section of today's Oregonian, architect Michael Willis takes a heartfelt stand against the ongoing stigma of public housing. The Willis essay is actually a response to a previous op-ed piece written by Ray Hallberg, who criticized the Housing Authority of Portland for applying for $40 million in federal money to tear down the 39-year-old, 60-unit Hillsdale Terrace in Southwest Portland (pictured above and below) and build 100 units of new public housing."Families in public housing projects blend poorly or not at all with the larger community," Hallberg wrote. "Project… -
Opportunity abounds with abatement: A conversation with PDC's John Warner about workforce housing
13 Nov 2009 | 10:30 amImagine if there was a way to put the Portland area's countless unemployed architects and construction workers back to work. And while you're imagining, suppose this plan stemmed from an already-existing city program that has simply been shelved for the last four years. And finally, imagine that this endeavor would not cost the city money but in fact do the opposite: create a long-term revenue stream. This isn't mere architectural pixie dust or pie-in-the-sky optimism. It comes from a conversation I had recently with John Warner, who manages housing development and workforce housing policy for… -
Envisioning a new Muslim Community Center in North Portland
9 Nov 2009 | 11:51 amRecently I got together with the architects from local firm Architecture Office to hear about a proposed design for the Muslim Community Center of Portland. The mosque would be home to the city's oldest Islamic congregation, formed in 1969, and is to be located on North Vancouver Avenue just south of Killingsworth. Although North and Northeast Portland have burgeoned with gentrification and added economic investment over the last decade, and the area is home to many churches, the Muslim Community Center could become something more: not just a place of worship, but a gathering place for…

Oooh, that smarts
20 Nov 2009 | 11:19 amThat new digital "smart" meter that the electric company's installing on the side of your house may be a little too smart, and a little too loose, for many people's liking. For one thing, it's going to enable the folks at the power company to figure out a lot more about you than they've ever known before: "Instead of measuring energy use at the end of each billing period, smart meters will provide this information at much shorter intervals," the report notes. "Even if electricity use is not recorded minute by minute, or at the appliance level, information may be gleaned from ongoing… -

Keeping Warm
20 Nov 2009 | 2:14 pmWhenever it’s fall, I just want to keep myself wrapped up in tons of layers and eat as many pumpkin things as possible. However, I haven’t quite gotten around to the pumpkins that I have sitting in my apartment from my trip to the pumpkin patch. I have all these ideas in my head: pumpkin smoothies, pumpkin curry, pumpkin chili, pumpkin muffins and of course, pumpkin pie. Unfortunately, as for staying warm, I am a big wuss because I think that Portland weather is just too cold for my tastes and it’s not even winter yet. The weather that I’m experiencing now is… -
Metropolitan Farms - Red Room - Nov. 19, 2009
20 Nov 2009 | 2:02 pmThis middle aged power pop trio can be summed up with two words…”pleasant surprise”. The Red Room tells people “Don’t Fear the 82nd” but honestly the 82nd does seem like a LONG way from home…physically and figuratively. It’s a little bit of a different world…with different kinds of businesses and folks…which got me thinking…what REALLY goes on at a live lingerie show? I doubt I’ll ever find out first hand, but I’m curious. So, if anyone has experience feel free to let me know. Now, back to Metropolitan Farms. I…

19 Nov 2009 | 7:23 amAnother generation of parents can soon terrify its children at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour. According to KPTV, Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour is returning to Portland. There’s no timeline yet, other than “as soon as possible.” The first Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour opened in Portland in 1963, followed quickly by numerous franchises (58 by 1970). Google Controls the Value of Your House
20 Nov 2009 | 10:02 amThis complaint off the Google Transit e-mail list today: The walk score of the homes in Great Neck are artificially low in www.zillow.com which is a home valuation web sitedue to the fact that the MTA or the LIRR trains do not provide them with the transit data. For me the highlight presentation on opening day on Wednesday was about the safety affects of different street network types. The surprising finding was that cities built before 1950 are safer (in terms of both serious injuries and fatalities for all classes of… -
Talking to Conservatives About Rail Transit
19 Nov 2009 | 8:35 amStreetfilms has a great video with William Lind, a conservative transit advocate, about how to talk about transit in terms that conservatives will appreciate. I would also note that the late Paul Weyrich, who co-founded the Heritage Foundation, was a trail transit advocate, evening making that point while serving on an infrastructure panel for the Bush administration. Let Me Google That For You
17 Nov 2009 | 2:53 pmPardon me while I vent for a moment. The Internet is, without question, the greatest assemblage of information in the history of mankind. Even more impressive than the sheer volume of data accessible via the Internet is the utter simplicity and ease of use of its interface. Having grown up in an era when you were limited by the contents of your local library, and further limited by your ability to shuffle through a catalog of 3 x 5 cards and your mastery of the Dewey Decimal system, it’s nothing less than a miracle. You can find the answer to very nearly any question you can formulate… -
Progress Report
16 Nov 2009 | 12:43 pmToday I discovered that a Google Docs spreadsheet maxes out at 100 rows, forcing you to start a new sheet. I guess that’s fair. But that means that my little weight-tracking charts are constrained to a particular size, and specifically that means that the chart corresponding to the first sheet has a particularly serendipitous endpoint: As you might expect, I rebounded a bit subsequent to that final plummet, but not all the way back up, which is kind of nice. As predicted, I’ve been mostly plateaued lately on the weight front, but at least not losing ground. Overall, I’ve… -

11 Nov 2009 | 1:20 pmYou might be familiar with the comedy group “Broken Lizard”. If you’re not, then you might still be familiar with some of their movies: Supertroopers? Beerfest? After starting out as a humble sketch comedy group back at Colgate University, the five lizards have developed a knack for creating cult comedies. Their movies feature a type of humor that is characterized by Wikipedia as “physical comedy, gross-out humor.” Okay, it’s NOT high art. Some might say it’s lowbrow, or drunk frat-boy humor. I prefer to think of it as a guilty pleasure. In any event,… -

Celebration and Anxiety
30 Oct 2009 | 1:41 pmToday is my daughter’s birthday. Under the heading of “special relativity” I must confess that it feels like she turned thirteen sometime last month, not last year. I know I have lectured her countless times that she “is thirteen now, and we have higher expectations” of her. Well, that lecture is now obsolete. Have I mentioned that she’s almost as tall as I am now? And taller than her mother? Oy. When I have not been pondering my daughter’s rapid ascent to maturity (and my own concomitant slide into senility), I’ve been worrying about NaNoWriMo.
