  • TriMet: Simplification or Fare Increase?

    Portland Transport
    26 Jan 2012 | 10:39 pm
Joe Rose at the Oregonian is reporting that a TriMet fare task force may will recommend doing away with zones, and prohibiting using transfers for return trips (transfers would only work in one direction). While I'm a big proponent of keeping things simple, this proposal does not excite me. Beyond potential equity issues (I honestly don't know if this is better or worse for transit-dependent folks, but OPAL is already objecting) which should get a very thorough analysis, I generally prefer some relationship between distances and fares. Tying trip cost to distance is important to encourage…
  • Should TriMet consider the MOS for Milwaukie MAX?

    Portland Transport
    26 Jan 2012 | 12:06 am
The Portland-Milwaukie MAX project commenced construction last year, albeit concentrated in downtown. Trees have been ripped out along SW Lincoln, work on the bridge has started, and work is also starting on the so-called "Harbor Structure", a viaduct over Harbor Drive between SW Naito and SW Gibbs. Work on the bulk of the project, beyond the new bridge, doesn't start until next year. That hasn't stopped activists in Clackamas County, who are skeptical of the project, from trying to block the county (and the city of Milwaukie) from contributing funding. Whether these effort a) are legal, and…

We are all in need of the Vitamin D from sun, and spending time walking or running outdoors instead of on a treadmill is a refreshing change. That lush, fresh green color the West coast is famous for has indeed come to life at last, but unfortunately, those of us who suffer from allergies (as much as we love being outdoors and enjoying the spring), also have to contend with the stuffy noses, watery and itching eyes, skin reactions, wheezing or increased asthma symptoms.

The new Martin Luther King Jr Viaduct, which opened in October, is — at least from a cursory glance at the news stories about it — an unpopular boondoggle that opened a year and a half later than planned. And as a bonus, the road itself is bumpy, with slightly bowed segments that produce the badump . . . badump . . . badump sensation of, well, slightly bowed highways. Be that as it may,…

Making it much more expensive for honest passengers to ride, all the while cutting bus service, is just going to accelerate the death spiral. Tri-Met's allowed itself to be Blumenauered into oblivion. You'll have to ride a bike, because there won't be a bus, and the streets will be pretty much blocked to cars. And now we're up to a five buck minimum entry fee every time we go downtown? The phrase "ghost town" comes immediately to mind.

"It’s not a beautiful skyline," she said. We have a beautiful airport, though, and several excellent moving companies. People who don't like Portland, and want everyone else to pay to remake it the way they want it, should avail themselves of those…

  • Biplanes Over Portland, 1920

    Dan Davis
    26 Jan 2012 | 8:21 am
I don’t know why the artist felt the need to place dozens of biplanes in the skies over Portland but the planes give a rather dramatic, yet whimsical, perspective to the downtown core area of 1920. (Library of Congress)

The Ones She Didn’t Answer (& Why) Her penmanship’s gone shaky. Every curlicue of capital U and little s and all of the many many Is are mangled branches of dowsing. Find your way to the pasture, the girl with the farm boots sloshing through corn. She’s a brilliant sun that everyone touches, third-degree laid over. It’s hard to hold the pen in the maelstrom; the letters slip away from the lines. Every message in this box says the same thing: I loved you. I lost you. You’re a bitch. Come back to me. She didn’t understand that each turn away was a…

    Dave
    26 Jan 2012 | 9:12 am
The blogger behind Banana Wonder, dedicated to food, culture and the people in between, has a mission: to find the best pretzel in Portland, Oregon. The first stop on her quest, last August, was Bridgeport Brewery (1313 NW Marshal), where she wrote of the house made pretzels: These were good, but by no means blew my socks off. Deschutes Brewery (210 NW 11th) was next – and the brew pub pretzel did not disappoint: The Pretzel: Invokes glorious carbohydrate-happy sensors with thick, doughy insides. Good amount of electrolyte balancing salt flecks to keep you coming back for more without…

  • TriMet: Simplification or Fare Increase?

Whether these effort a) are legal, and…
  • The power of urban demolition

    23 Jan 2012 | 11:46 pm
One of the things which Portland is famous for in urbanist circles, was the decision in the 1970s to remove Harbor Drive and replace it with Tom McCall Waterfront Park (or Waterfront Park as it was known back then). And more recently, another urban demolition project--of smaller scope--helped in making NW Portland what is is today: the 1999 removal of the Lovejoy Viaduct. The viaduct, an elevated structure running between the Broadway Bridge and NW 14th street, with a spur connecting to NW 12th, crossed over a railyard which used to exist in NW Portland. As part of a series of projects to…

  • We're Ba-ack!

    Katie
    14 Jan 2012 | 12:52 pm
Well this post is obviously long over-due. With the extended holiday break and then a mad rush getting things back in order, we've been a bit busy. Last weekend I drove down to Eugene to be with Nick and Toby. Nick hosted an open house for a new four-plex on Saturday and we spent the rest of the weekend running errands, doing a puzzle, and looking at guns (yes, Nick is trying to talk me into getting a 20 gauge. Didn't see that one coming, huh? ;) This weekend started off with a fun-filled game night with three of my coworkers and their significant others. All of the girls work together and it…

    19 Dec 2011 | 12:12 pm
It has been a long time since I've blogged, but I assure you it has been because I have been so busy! Well, now that we are approaching the holiday season, real estate has slowed to a crawling pace and I have some free time! A welcome change-of-pace and a nice way to conclude a crazy year. Originally I was going to write a month-by-month summary of what we've done, but pictures and collages are so much more fun! And, of course, a video of Katie being an absolute dead-eye 12-gauge handlin' skeet shooter! Good job! Unfortunately I've had a major delay in closing my first deal. I should've been…

  • Sister Visit!

    Katie
    7 Dec 2011 | 11:33 pm
I know I'm a few weeks late on this, but later is better than never, right? My sisters and my dad flew out to Portland on the 10th of November. We stopped at Rocky Butte on our way home from the airport for a gorgeous, clear-skied night view of the city and then spent the evening hanging out at home. On Friday we woke up early and started out on our drive to Eugene--with a nice long pit stop at the Woodburn Outlets, of course! We more than got our fill of clearances, sales and specials going on for Veteran's Day weekend--including 40% off everything at the North Face and Bass Shoes. When we…
